There’s Nothing Hidden About Hidden Networks
Users occasionally ask why WiFi Explorer does not detect “hidden” networks. WiFi Explorer relies on Apple’s CoreWLAN framework for scanning, and CoreWLAN does not return useful information about a network that omits its SSID from scan results. If your Mac is already connected to that network, WiFi Explorer can display its information. Otherwise, the network may not appear in the list.
When you configure an access point to hide its SSID, it stops including the network name in certain discovery frames. The wireless network itself remains detectable because the access point must continue transmitting beacon frames. A client can join only if it already knows the SSID and supplies it during the connection process.
Many routers present this setting as a privacy or security feature, but hiding an SSID does not protect a Wi-Fi network. A wireless capture can reveal the network name when a client connects or exchanges other frames that identify it. In addition, devices configured to join a hidden network may need to send directed probe requests containing its SSID. That behavior can expose the names of networks a device has previously joined and may create privacy concerns.
Hidden networks can also take longer to discover and may make automatic connections less reliable. For these reasons, leave SSID broadcasting enabled and secure the network with WPA3 Personal and a strong password. If you need compatibility with older devices, use WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode or WPA2 Personal with AES rather than legacy WPA or WEP.
